RED V-Raptor VV 8K - A powerhouse for our productions.
In the first video of our new series, we will be taking a look at a camera that has changed the game for us here at The Picture House - The RED V Raptor.
Today at The Picture House we're going to be taking a look at the RED V-Raptor VistaVision 8K and we're going to be talking about why it's the perfect camera for us.
Firstly, the footage is unreal. We can get so much data out of this camera. That means we can push and pull it in the grade much further than we have been able to do with any other camera system we've used.
RED have had a little bit of a bad rep in the past for reliability, but they've resolved it with this camera. It's rock solid, it just keeps going.
I know dynamic range is one of those buzzwords that we need to try and avoid talking about too much but in this camera there's so much range here that we can shoot areas of one image that might be really dark and another that are really bright and we can trust that in post. We can push and pull them to get them within the right exposure that we need.
The footage straight out of the camera, even if you weren't to do a whole bunch of work to it, looks great. So it gives you so much faith and trust that you're going to be able to get a fantastic image as the end result.
8K may be overkill for many productions but on some when it's warranted it gives us so many options in post. We can crop a 9x16 out of the middle without having to reshoot the same shot. We can reframe the shot without any great loss in quality but it also means that we can grab digital images, frames from that footage and use them as photos if the client needs.
It uses RF mount which is perfect for us because we've got loads of RF lenses but also RF lenses are so sharp their resolving power is incredible. That means we're getting the most out of our sensor by using really sharp and detailed lenses. Using RF mount means that we can adapt this camera to being EF or PL really easily by just using mount adapters. So for example we can put Canon CNE primes on it or other lenses such as this Anamorphic Great Joy by just adapting it to EF or if we wanted to put a PL lens on there it's just a case of getting a different mount for it.
It's super modular so you can customise this, rig it up to being a great big monstrosity of a camera or you can break it right down to something light, small and nimble for those productions where you just don't need a heavy camera.
But ultimately for us the footage that comes out of the camera is just phenomenal. It's a rock solid multi format camera that gives us huge amounts of options in post production.
